History

With a rich history spanning more than a century, Brother has grown from humble beginnings into a diversified multinational corporation. While its technology and business activities have evolved over time, a foundation of strong leadership and product innovation has remained a constant throughout Brother's history and remains just as important today as it was in 1908.

1908

            

Kanekichi Yasui established Yasui Sewing Machine Co*.


1928

        

The company releases a chain-stitch sewing machine for the production of straw hats, its first product under the brand name of Brother.


1932

 

Brother succeeds in the domestic mass production of sewing machines.


1934

 

Nippon Sewing Machine Manufacturing Co. (now Brother Industries, Ltd.) is established in Japan.


1954

 

A regional sales company is established in the Americas.


1958

 

A regional sales company is established in Europe.


1961


 

The production of portable typewriters begins.
Brother enters the fields of business machines and machine tools.


1962

 

Corporate name is changed to Brother Industries, Ltd.


1963

 

Stock is listed in the Tokyo Stock Exchange, Osaka Stock Exchange and Nagoya Stock Exchange.


1971

 

Production of the world’s first high-speed dot-matrix printer begins.


1977

 

Brother International (Aust) Pty. Ltd. is established in Australia.


1979

 

Taiwan Brother Industries, Ltd. starts domestic production of sewing machines.


1980

 

Production of electronic office typewriters begins.


1984


 

Brother celebrates the 50th anniversary of its incorporation.
Brother provides typewriters at the Los Angeles Olympics Games as an official supplier.


1985


 

Brother Industries (U.K.) Ltd. begins production of electronic typewriters.
Production of CNC tapping centre begins.


1987


 

Brother enters the telecommunications equipment market.
Production of laser printers and fax machines begins.


1988

 

Production of labelling systems begins.


1989


 

Brother International Singapore Pte Ltd (the ASEAN regional office) was established.
Production of business machine parts starts at Brother Industries Technology (M) Sdn. Bhd. in Malaysia.


1991

 

Brother Industries, Ltd. (parent company) obtains its first ISO 9002 certification.


1993


 

Brother starts sponsorship of annual Brother Cup International Young Fashion Designer Contest in China.
Zhuhai Brother Industries, Co, Ltd. begins domestic production of sewing machines in China.


1994


 

Brother Industries (Johor) Sdn. Bhd. commences production of fax machines in Malaysia.
Brother’s 30 millionth typewriter comes off the production line.


1995

 

Brother is the first to launch Laser Multi-Function Centre (MFC).


1996


 

Brother Industries (U.K.) Ltd. acquires its first ISO 14001 certification.


1997

 

Brother becomes an Official Supporter of the International Olympic Committee.


1998

 

Brother starts sponsorship activity of Formula One racing team.


2000


 

Brother marks its production of 30 million domestic sewing machines.
Brother records its production of 10 million electronic labelling systems.
Brother Malaysia was set-up; creating Brother’s very own office here in Malaysia.


2002


 

Brother’s Fax/MFC machines production reaches 20 million units.
Brother - World’s First Printer manufacturer to achieve the coveted “TCO” standard, a globally recognised benchmark for excellence in ecology, energy, emissions and ergonomics.


2003


 

Brother Industries (Shenzhen) Ltd. begins production of MFCs.
Development of the revolutionary Capillary Tube Delivery Ink System for colour inkjet MFCs.


2004


 

Brother marks shipment of 10 millionth Laser Product.


2006


 

Brother develops a new range of inkjet MFCs incorporating 1.5pl (picolitre) ink droplet technology coupled with Innobella™ genuine consumables for high quality prints.
Brother is named among the top 50 IT vendors in Asia in ZDNet Asia Top Tech Index 2006/2007.


2007


 

Brother launches the most celebrated colour laser printers and MFCs incorporating their own proprietary print engine technology.


2008


 

Brother’s HL-2170W is awarded the “Pick of the Year” award for Monochrome Laser Printer by Buyers’ Lab.
Brother introduced the World’s First A3 Inkjet Multi-Function Centres (named Professional Series)


2009


 

Brother Malaysia receives ISO9001:2008 certification.


2010


 

Brother Malaysia receives Top 3 Brands Award in the AIO/Multi-Function Printer Category in the HWM Brand Survey Awards 2010
