Corporate Social Responsibility
Brother strongly believes in being a responsible corporate citizen, and this is reflected in our broad range of corporate social responsibility (CSR) policies and programmes. The sections below provide a detailed look at Brother's CSR initiatives.
Brother has a long-standing belief in respecting the environment and caring for anyone related to our company. These principles are captured in the Brother Group Global Charter, which was crafted in 1999 based on the concept of "Tomoiki" (co-existence). Through our CSR Management activities, we hope to establish a mutually beneficial relationship in which our stakeholders trust and respect us and our employees take pride in working for the company.
Brother believes that CSR should be managed just as any other business activity, and thus it should be integrated into our daily operations. To this end, we have formed a committee to increase awareness of CSR within the company and formulate strategies and initiatives to involve everyone in the company in contributing back to society and our environment.
Brother Singapore is a member of Singapore Compact. We decided to join in order to express our belief in and commitment to good CSR. We hope that this will broaden our network of communication with like-minded companies to increase dialogue and boost the exchange of information and experience, thereby making CSR more meaningful for our stakeholders.
As a start, Brother will be focusing on our customers, employees and the environment. Our thoughts and our actions are geared towards providing our customers with products and services of superior value that they can trust. Our employees are important to us. By providing them with an environment in which they can fulfil their aspirations and have a well-balanced work life, we can be sure that they in turn will take care of our customers and the environment. Brother will continue to look into innovative ways to recycle our products and ensure that our recycling programme continues to expand and improve.
We recognise that CSR is a journey. It is to us a fulfilment of our motto "At Your Side". And we are proud to undertake this journey because we know that we are creating an organisation that our stakeholders can respect and our employees can be proud to be a part of.

Employees are important stakeholders as well as customers to Brother. Brother is a company in which our employees take pride in. Communication between management and employees are important to the company and Brother recognizes that communication is an important driver of employee engagement.
In promoting constructive dialogue between management and employees, our quarterly communication session with our employees is a channel for sharing company information with employees and also for them to raise concerns through this internal communication channel.
In demonstrating Top Management Commitment in engaging our employees, Brother conduct an annual employee engagement survey, employee kick off meeting and MD dialogue with employees.
Brother is committed in providing a workplace in which our employees are respected and take pride in.
As a company we recognize the importance of having talented leaders at all levels of our organization. We invest in the development of all our employees. Our leaders attend leadership training in the area of Performance Management and Appraisal, Building and Leading Teams and Leadership Competencies courses.
We recognize Leadership is critical to organizational success and employee engagement. Training helps to develop this critical capability to grow and develop our talent.
Brother Singapore has won the Gold Award at the Singapore Health Award for 2012.
The Singapore H.E.A.L.T.H (Helping Employees Achieve Life-Time Health) Award is presented by the Health Promotion Board bi-annually to give national recognition to organizations with commendable Workplace Health Promotion programs. The Award has four categories: Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze.
The award reaffirms our commitment to promoting healthy and vibrant lifestyles for our associates, who are the driving force behind our success as an organisation.
Since 2006, Brother has developed a holistic workplace health and wellness program to enhance health attitudes and beliefs at the workplace. Brother WHP program includes creating opportunities for regular physical activities such as weekly running sessions, badminton and bowling sessions and other fitness programmes such as yoga classes and also on site health screening. To inculcate the importance of healthy dietary habits in staff, Brother organises educational classes such as health talks, healthy food demos and healthy fruits and drink distribution.
We have won the Bronze Award in 2008 and the Silver Award in 2010. We would not have achieved this award without the strong support from our Leadership – Managing Director, Takeo Shimazu and our Associates.
We will continue to seek improvement in our health activities to enhance the well- being of our Associates and provide a working environment that is conducive for good health embodying our company motto that we will always be “At your side”.
BROTHER LENDS SUPPORT TO CONSUMER RIGHTS
In March 2007, Brother International Singapore participated in the World Consumer Rights Day in collaboration with the Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE), an organisation that looks after consumer rights in Singapore. This is an annual international event celebrated on March 15. As the major sponsor for this event, Brother provided giveaway bags and three printers to be given out during the event's lucky draw. Brother is the first printer company in Singapore to have participated in this event, which ties in strongly with our customer-first approach. Our participation left a positive impression on the 2,300 people who participated in the walk as a show of solidarity for consumer rights in Singapore.

Brother supports CASE event on World Consumer Rights Day for second consecutive year
Brother showed its support for consumer rights by supporting the Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE) in the "Walk with CASE 2008" event. Held on March 16, it was the second year Brother has participated in this cause to mark World Consumer Rights Day (WCRD).
"Brother has always underlined our 'At Your Side' motto with our 'Customer-First Approach', in all aspects of our business, for 100 years", explained Mr. Takeo Shimazu, Managing Director of Brother International Singapore.

The Environment - Brother's Contribution
As an environmentally responsible corporate citizen, Brother's printing solutions are all friends of the earth. Brother is the first and only printer manufacturer to achieve the coveted TCO standard-the toughest environmental standard in the world-since 2002. This is a globally recognised benchmark for excellence in ecology, energy, emissions and ergonomics.
The Brother Group in Japan established the 5R concept, which lays the foundation and sets the guidelines for active participation in global efforts. As a member of the Brother Group, Brother International Singapore is also guided by these environmental policies, and we have adopted the 5R concept as a basis for our own environmental activities:
1. REDUCE waste material by recycling
Our machines' eco-friendliness is determined by the RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) Directive. There is restricted use of certain hazardous substances-such as lead, mercury and calcium -in the manufacture of our products. On top of that, our machines are labelled Energy Savers, which means they consume less power, and therefore contribute to our holistic approach to being environmentally friendly. At Brother, we provide the ideal solutions that exceed expectations now and into the future. We aimed to be "At Your Side" every step of the way.
Brother consumables are manufactured to exacting, environmentally friendly specifications. Brother worldwide is committed to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and through these controls we ensure that quality and reliability are built into every consumable and machine we manufacture. Furthermore, everything we manufacture is produced to worldwide health and safety standards.
Energy Star Approval
Our Laser Printers, Multi-Function Centres (MFCs) and Faxes comply with the International Energy Star Program. As a long-time Energy Star partner, all Brother Group companies worldwide have strong social and environmental responsibilities to contribute to a cleaner planet.
Brother's Environmental Protection Measure
Our printers and MFCs have adopted a printing system that reduces consumables wastage. This printing system ensures that users no longer have to throw away a drum or inkjet printheads every time the toner or ink cartridge has been depleted. Toners and ink cartridges may now be replaced separately. Additionally, all our models have a draft print mode to reduce the amount of toner or ink required for standard prints.
Brother is the only printer manufacturer with TCO99 certification. TCO99 is an exacting standard governing product safety, ergonomics, handling and physical design, working environment emissions, total environmental management strategy, manufacturing processes, ecology and the operator's manual.
Brother's Green Purchasing Policy
Brother promotes activities that are environmentally friendly. Such practices include purchasing products using a recommended product list, which includes items ranging from toilet paper to company vehicles.
Brother and Recycling for the Environment
Brother (Japan) established a recycling centre in Japan in 1998. This centre is capable of disassembling, separating, classifying, recovering and then recycling waste products. Items that are recycled include waste plastics, substrates and motors.
Brother Green Project - A Recycling Initiative in Singapore
As part of our ongoing green efforts, the Brother Green Project is a new recycling initiative to provide our customers with an easy and convenient way of disposing used Brother consumables. We take back used Brother consumables (ink cartridges, toner cartridges and drums) from customers.

GOING GREEN! Brother supports environment conservation
Everyone can make a conscious effort to make our environment a better place. Brother Singapore is also doing its part to contribute to going green!
It was our pleasure to be invited by North West CDC to support Clean and Green Singapore 2008 - "Come Out and Play, It's No TV Day!", which was held on 9 November 2008. The event was jointly organised by the National Environment Agency (NEA) and North West CDC with the aim to encourage Singaporeans to care for and protect our living environment by adopting an environmentally friendly lifestyle.
The guest of honour was Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports. Special guests included Mrs. Yu-Foo Yee Shoon, Dr. Teo Ho Pin, Dr. Mohamad Maliki Osman, Mr. Ong Ah Heng and Mr. Liang Eng Hwa.
One of the highlights of this event was a fashion show showcasing fashion by students in a "Made To Wear" Recycle contest. Students from the North West District schools participated in this contest by recycling used fabrics and materials to make them into clothes.
Brother Singapore supported the students by providing seven home sewing machines for them to sew the materials into clothes. Our Brother staff also provided guidance and training to the students on using our home sewing machines.
To thank Brother for its support, NEA presented us with a plaque, which was received by Mr. Kawakami, Director of Image Sales.
We are proud to be involved in initiatives that encourage recycling in support of environment conservation.

Brother join first ever recycling initiative – Project Homecoming
Brother, Canon, Dell, Epson and Lexmark join hands to raise environmental awareness through Singapore’s first joint cartridge recycling project
Launched on 1 December 2011, Project Homecoming is Singapore’s first-ever joint printer brand ink and toner cartridge recycling initiative. It is the first international expansion of the world’s first joint printer brand recycling project that first started in Japan three years ago. In Singapore, Project Homecoming is led by Brother, Canon, Dell, Epson and Lexmark and is supported by the National Environment Agency (NEA) and National Library Board (NLB).
The initiative aims to encourage the recycling of cartridges through the provision of easily accessible bins for the public to properly recycle ink and toner cartridges. It further aims to raise community awareness around the importance of this effort, as well as recycling in general.
The Project Homecoming cartridge recycling bins are conveniently located at selected Singapore National Library branches where the public can easily deposit expended ink and toner cartridges from printers of any brand for recycling. The cartridges are periodically collected for sorting and repatriation to their original manufacturers for proper recycling.

Brother ECO Day - "Plant Adoption"
20 September, 2012 marks Brother Singapore environment day.
In promoting Eco consciousness in our office, our Brother associates pledge to support Brother Earth by adopting a plant. This action demonstrates their commitment to Brother Environment Program.
By adopting a plant, they participate in the eco point program in earning eco point for their eco conscious action.
Brother associates are reminded to take care of our planet when taking care of the plant.
The plants also promote a better working environment for us such as better air quality, greenery which is good for the eyes and our mental health.
We also communicated with Brother associates Brother environment initiatives worldwide and Brother Singapore environment initiatives such as Project Home coming and Eco Point Program.
We are pleased to have Shimazu san to present the potted plants to our "Eco Champions" who pledge to support Brother Earth.

On 17th June 2013, Brother Associates visited Arc Children’s Centre located at Kim Keat Road. Arc is a non-profit day-care facility that provides assistance to children with cancer or other life-threatening illness.

Brother S’pore support 2013 Race against Cancer
For the 3rd consecutive year, Brother supported “Race Against Cancer”. Organized by the Singapore Cancer Society, Race Against Cancer aims to raise funds for various programs such as cancer treatment subsidy, hospice home care, welfare assistance for needy cancer patients and free cancer screenings to support cancer patients and survivors.
Lead by Shimazu san, 32 Brother Singapore Assoicates joined by Andy Shima (MD from BCTL) ran 5km, 10km and 15km race to raise fund for cancer. This is part of Brother CSR Golden Ring Project (Relay For Life) in which Brother Associates in various countries run to support cancer.
The race into its 5th year, drew more than 9,000 participants. Held in Angsana Green, East Coast Park, S$750,000 was raised to fund the Singapore Cancer Society programs and services. The race was flagged off by Acting Minister for Culture Community & Youth, Mr Lawrence Wong.
Brother is proud to be engaged in healthy activity for a worthy cause. We look forward to more Brother Associates joining next year!

5th BROTHER – AWWA Street Soccer Tournament 2012
2012 marks the 5th year that Brother and AWWA has partnered together to show our support for the community.
The 1st inaugural soccer tournament was held back in November 2008, and has since enriched the lives of about 1000 youths in the last 5 years.
We are also pleased to have Mr Edwin Tong, MP for Kallang-Moulmein GRC as Guest of Honour who continued his support by gracing the event.
This year the exhibition match was between Brother team and AWWA team. This is the first time Brother played against our partner and we have won!
At Brother, we truly understand the impact of nurturing youths and shaping their lives for a better future. Brother associates’ has been interacting with the youth through the years through our in house sports club - running, badminton and bowling.
We would like to thank everyone for the commitment and contributions in our community giving effort representative of Brother’s commitment to always be “at your side”.

Brother S’pore support 2012 Race against Cancer
On Sunday 22th July 2012, Brother associates’ rise early to run for a cause, joined by AWWA Staff and Youth. Brother supported “Race Against Cancer” for the 2nd consecutive year. 27 brother associates and 12 AWWA Staff and Youth participated in the race with 7 Brother associates participating in the 15km competitive run and 20 others in the 10km run and 5km fun run.
The race was flagged off by Acting Community Development, Youth and Sports Minister Major-General Chan Chun Sing.
A record S$700,000 was raised for the Singapore Cancer Society in this run which saw some 8,500 participants which surpassed last year’s number of 7,500. Brother is proud to be engaged in healthy activity for a worthy cause.

On Sunday 10th July 2011, Brother associates rise early to run for a cause, joined by our AWWA youth.
Organized by the Singapore Cancer Society (SCS), Race Against Cancer aims to raise funds for various programmes, such as cancer treatment subsidy, hospice home care, welfare assistance for needy cancer patients, free cancer screenings and public education initiatives.
18 brother associates participated in the competitive 15km, 10km run and 5km fun run. The race were flagged off by Acting Community Development, Youth and Sports Minister Major-General Chan Chun Sing.

Brother Singapore Joins Hands With AWWA To Nurture Singapore Youths for Fourth Consecutive Years
Brother International Singapore, a leader in home and business IT peripherals that focuses on the “Customer-First” approach, has pledged to continue its support for nurturing the younger generation alongside the Asian Women’s Welfare Association (AWWA) for a fourth consecutive year. To kickstart the year-long collaboration, Brother and Members of Parliament demonstrated their polished soccer skills and sportsmanship in an exhibition match at the annual Brother-AWWA Street Soccer Tournament held on 2 July 2011.

Brother-AWWA Inaugural Street Soccer Tournament 2008
Reaching out to the Youth. Kallang Community Centre turned into a spectacle on 15 November 2008 as Brother and AWWA organised their first Street Soccer Tournament for Youth, with the aim to reach out to youth through street soccer to get kids off the streets and channel their energy in sport activities.

Brother International-AWWA FSC MOU signing
Brother International adopted the Asian Women's Welfare Association (AWWA) as its official charity for 2008, supporting the charitable efforts of the AWWA Family Service Center with a primary focus on engaging the youth of the community in sports activities. "Brother Singapore hopes to make a genuinely positive contribution to the community", said Mr. Takeo Shimazu, Managing Director of Brother International Singapore.

BROTHER SINGAPORE CONTRIBUTED TO THE FIRST GARMENT FACTORY IN ACEH
The first Aceh Garment Factory was set up by the Aceh Provincial Government in collaboration with IGTC to lay the foundation for further industrial activities and create more job opportunities. In order to support the victims of post-tsunami and civil conflicts in Aceh, Brother contributed to this project with a donation of industrial sewing machine equipment.
